The proportion of ground area covered by tree crowns, serving as a measure of stand density. It is an important indicator of silvicultural conditions and ecological states. Canopy closure is estimated from aerial photographs as a percentage or, in stand descriptions, assessed terrestrially in classes (from dense to open) or visually.
