Grain

The smallest unit of observation or modeling in space or time. In forestry this is the resolution of the data or analysis. Examples include a single tree, a 1 m pixel, a plot of fixed size, an hour, or a day. Finer grain means smaller units and more detail. Grain is distinct from extent, which is the total area or period considered.
