leaf area index (LAI)

The light reaching a plant stand is attenuated as it passes through the canopy, depending on the foliage density. The measure of foliage density is the leaf area index, defined as the ratio of the total leaf area to the ground area, expressed in square meters of leaf area per square meter of ground area.
