shade tolerant tree species

Tree species with a relatively high tolerance to shading, especially in their juvenile stage. Shade-tolerant species (e.g. beech, fir, yew) develop shade leaves under low light conditions; these are thinner and larger than sun leaves, allowing the trees to use weak light more efficiently and to reach their light saturation point at lower intensities (cf. light-demanding species).
