underplanting

Establishment of a secondary, non-competing stand layer composed of shade-tolerant tree species to maintain stem quality and soil conditions beneath a main stand of light-demanding species, e.g., underplanting a 40-year-old oak stand with beech. The understorey should never grow into the crown layer of the dominant stand.
