pruning

the selective removal of living or dead branches from standing trees to improve timber quality, reduce knots, raise crown clearance, lower ladder fuels, and maintain access. It is done intentionally on well formed crop trees, keeping enough live crown for growth, making clean cuts just outside the branch collar, and limiting wound size. Timing, height, and intensity are matched to species and objectives, since excessive pruning can slow growth and invite decay.
